Minot Area Music Archive

Thanks to Jason Staggs and Karen Hoewt

1) Jason loaned the archive some great photos, the second Rock Combo EP and a video performance of As Played on Earth almost 3 years ago. I promptly forgot I had them and he has been more than decent about the whole ordeal. These items will be up ASAP.

2) Karen sent a copy of the Abner recording and Nobody’s Children’s “Mudslinger” and some other great items probably more than a year ago. Things have been overwhelming, but I AM going to get that CD copy to you, and these items will find their way into the archive equally ASAP.

Thanks to both of these individuals for both their contributions to the archive and extreme patience with my inability to get to them.

News! and also Notes!

First and most importantly, as has been the historical case with Minot music we have lost a venue and in its place has sprung up another - although this time almost immediately. No months long droughts here.

Let us first remember The Red Carpet, who after providing our town with live music for well over a year finally succumbed to a terrible landlord.

Now let us look forward to Pangea House a collectively run venue looking to do not only live music but provide a space for community activities. I won’t attempt to speak to their goals, but what they are doing is very impressive. Go check them out.

In venue unrelated news, I am in fact still carrying this project on, these would the “lean” times as between work, Atom’s Rite, the studio and its projects, and life in general the time to archive incoming submissions has been tough to come by. I am, however, still accepting them - and they will eventually be archived and this will come together.

Submissions Reminder

I was submitted a home made compilation yesterday that was largely mp3 sources from bands 2004+ etc. IT is great that Minot music fans care enough to produce these, however — I can no longer accept them. Hold on to them for the time being. I need bands original recordings when possible, with a label-released comp. serving as a substitute when nothing else exists. I have no way to source the music on a home made comp or know or control its quality.

Therefore I will reiterate my aims for the current collection of music: any/everything produced in its original format from 1990-2000. The work on archiving the other material will begin after that has been completed.

I am not trying to sound harsh but there is an extreme amount of data to sort trough here, and I am trying to do it in the most logical way possible. From here forward material not fitting the above criteria will be politely rejected.

more 2.0 news

work on the site relaunch continues. the plan, as it stands now, is to flesh out what occurred between the initial beginnings of the “minot scene” and the end of the “liberty era” - so if we are not stickling for dates we are going to say 1992-2001. Once we have a handle on the media from that era and it is secured and accessible to all y’all, we will focus more on 2001-present.

as an addendum, here is a kind of wishlist of what I am searching out right about now:

nobody’s children “mudslinger” cassette (i used to have literally dozens of these to distro…lost in a move)

59 cents recordings in whatever fashion they may exists

that is early stuff. we have access to the “thunder chicken” tape, just a matter of digitzing and archiving it - but thanks to everyone who offered it up - that tape got around. The “Bubble Gum Rock” compilation I am sure XBJX has and he and I will get together and sort through our mutual collections one of these days. really.

If you feel your band/genre is being ignored, send me an email. You are welcome, provided you aren’t some skinhead band, in which case you are not welcome. I haven’t updated the list o’ bands in forever because I plan on reformatting that entire deal, so imagine the bands that are missing in there.

minor update/rant

still working on v2.0 organizing data making things more coherent. figuring out what to do with this mass of music. it will be worth the wait.

in international music community news, oink.me.uk (oink.cd) has been taken offline (google will give you the gory details. we who run the archive feel that the current music distribution model is hopelessly busted, and that you need look no further than the fact that bands are willing to sue their fans to see this in actuality. regardless, i posted this bit of what I consider the end all be all of commentary on the issue from the blog here.
an excerpt follows

*************** Until the walls finally come down, we’re in what will inevitably be looked back on as a very awkward, chaotic period in music history - fans are being arrested for sharing the music they love, and many artists are left helpless, unable to experiment with new business models because they’re locked into record contracts with backwards-thinking labels.

So what can you and I do to help usher in the brave new world? The beauty of Oink was how fans willingly and hyper-efficiently took on distribution roles that traditionally have cost labels millions of dollars. Music lovers have shown that they’re much more willing to put time and effort into music than they are money. It’s time to show artists that there’s no limit to what an energized online fanbase can accomplish, and all they’ll ever ask for in return is more music. And it’s time to show the labels that they missed a huge opportunity by not embracing these opportunities when they had the chance.

1. Stop buying music from major labels. Period. The only way to force change is to hit the labels where it hurts - their profits. The major labels are like Terry Schiavo right now - they’re on life support, drooling in a coma, while white-haired guys in suits try and change the laws to keep them alive. But any rational person can see that it’s too late, and it’s time to pull out the feeding tube. In this case, the feeding tube is your money. Find out which labels are members/supporters of the RIAA and similar copyright enforcement groups, and don’t support them in any way. The RIAA Radar is a great tool to help you with this. Don’t buy CDs, don’t buy iTunes downloads, don’t buy from Amazon, etc. Steal the music you want that’s on the major labels. It’s easy, and despite the RIAA’s scare tactics, it can be done safely - especially if more and more people are doing it. Send letters to those labels, and to the RIAA, explaining very calmly and professionally that you will no longer be supporting their business, because of their bullish scare tactics towards music fans, and their inability to present a forward-thinking digital distribution solution. Tell them you believe their business model is outdated and the days of companies owning artists’ music are over. Make it very clear that you will continue to support the artists directly in other ways, and make it VERY clear that your decision has come about as a direct result of the record company’s actions and inactions regarding digital music.

2. Support artists directly. If a band you like is stuck on a major label, there are tons of ways you can support them without actually buying their CD. Tell everyone you know about them - start a fansite if you’re really passionate. Go to their shows when they’re in town, and buy t-shirts and other merchandise. Here’s a little secret: Anything a band sells that does not have music on it is outside the reach of the record label, and monetarily supports the artist more than buying a CD ever would. T-shirts, posters, hats, keychains, stickers, etc. Send the band a letter telling them that you’re no longer going to be purchasing their music, but you will be listening to it, and you will be spreading the word and supporting them in other ways. Tell them you’ve made this decision because you’re trying to force change within the industry, and you no longer support record labels with RIAA affiliations who own the music of their artists.

If you like bands who are releasing music on open, non-RIAA indie labels, buy their albums! You’ll support the band you like, and you’ll support hard-working, passionate people at small, forward-thinking music labels. If you like bands who are completely independent and are releasing music on their own, support them as much as possible! Pay for their music, buy their merchandise, tell all your friends about them and help promote them online - prove that a network of passionate fans is the best promotion a band can ask for.

3. Get the message out. Get this message out to as many people as you can - spread the word on your blog or your MySpace, and more importantly, tell your friends at work, or your family members, people who might not be as tuned into the internet as you are. Teach them how to use torrents, show them where to go to get music for free. Show them how to support artists while starving the labels, and who they should and shouldn’t be supporting.

4. Get political. The fast-track to ending all this nonsense is changing intellectual property laws. The RIAA lobbies politicians to manipulate copyright laws for their own interests, so voters need to lobby politicians for the peoples’ interests. Contact your local representatives and senators. Tell them politely and articulately that you believe copyright laws no longer reflect the interests of the people, and you will not vote for them if they support the interests of the RIAA. Encourage them to draft legislation that helps change the outdated laws and disproportionate penalties the RIAA champions. Contact information for state representatives can be found here, and contact information for senators can be found here. You can email them, but calling on the phone or writing them actual letters is always more effective.

last night @ 62 doors

The decision to go to the show at 62 doors last night was a last minute one as I heard about it in passing, but I am very glad I went. turnout was middling, but fair for a weeknight - i am getting comfortable going to shows again - which is nice. it is hard to write about local music lately without using that word to death - nice. anywho, i digress, onto the recap:

i did decide to get dinner after work so i missed the beginning of Bombpop’s set, but what I caught impressed me. Raw and energetic, it is a sound Minot has been missing for quite some time, and it is a void I am glad Billy and co. have chosen to fill. The vocals (and this would plauge the sets for the entire night) were too low in the mix, but that was a technical and not a musical issue - so the boys get a pass.

Serviam was the big surprise of the night for me. I have known xbjx for years and we used to do the Liberty tavern together and to be perfectly honest the Grind/Metal/Death Genre (and forgive me if i am not using the correct-core adjectives here) has never really appealed to me - but this group of musicians strikes the perfect balance between punk rock enthusiasm and drive and technical prowess - without of course stretching to the outer limits of musicianship that would make them unapproachable or stanodffish - should such Malmsteen-esque delusions of granduer exist within Serviam, they are unassumingly invisible. This is your everyman’s Punk/Grind band. Songs that would simultaneously drive and groove, shifting tempo and feel, they really made alot out what has become a traditionally limited metal/punk palette. Maybe not a record I would put on at home, but definately a band I would put down $3 to see again.

Holy Shit will have to forgive me for not gathering where they were from, but hopefully I can offset that egregious wrong by saying they were joyous to watch. The vocals - completley inaudible. This was not of any concern to the band as they tore through a 30+ minute set of razor sharp ramones/buzzcocks/minor threat-esque classic punk/hardcore complete with an enormous shirtless bass player. Songs about chicken, nintendo, Brett Favre. Good Stuff.

Everytime I see the Diabolic Octopus play their Pixies inspired brand of punky surf rock it is better and tighter than the last time. They are recording (and RErecording), and printing shirts, and talking about touring. These guys are young and really, really good. Probably my favorite band in the area (but it is really hard to choose lately), and when there is a room full of people dancing and nodding heads and appreciating what they do, it is an impressive thing to do considering how short a period of time these guys have been making music. I am looking forward to what they do next.

So last night was a good time, if you weren’t there you missed out. Go to the next one. Really.
